Shlomo comes to Somersham!
Internationally renowned beatboxer Shlomo will be bringing his exciting and unique brand of music to Somersham Primary School this week. Along with fellow artiste Jestar, he will present workshops for children from Upper School classes, culminating in a memorable show for parents and visitors.
Shlomo has made music on three continents with people from all kinds of musical backgrounds, including the Mighty Boosh, Björk, Martha Wainwright, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker and Bill Bailey, but his visit to the Cambridgeshire Fens will be a first.
One of the world's leading beatboxers, Shlomo has worked for years to push the boundaries of beatboxing as an art form. A firm believer in the effectiveness of beatboxing as a tool to encourage young people to get into music, Shlomo and Jestar will be visiting Somersham Primary School on Wednesday 11th March 2009 to work with and perform for the children … a once in a lifetime experience for all of the school's budding musicians! Other events planned for this day celebrating music making include choral singing led by eminent soprano Amanda Roocroft (English National Opera), and percussion workshops with talented local musician Tim Gunnell (former winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition).
The children and the school's Parents and Friends Association have in part funded this community event.
The school's music subject leader, Frances Marsh, said: 'Shlomo's involvement at Somersham is a creative coup, and along with the percussion and choral workshops, meets our objective of introducing the children, and especially boys, to new styles of musical performance and composition. His show will be full of energy and spirit, encouraging everyone in the audience to have a go.'
To stay on the musical theme, the school Choir and Band played an assembly on Monday. You can have a listen to some recordings:
