Easter Showtime!

29 March 2006

The children and staff celebrated Easter in style this week with two shows performed to enthusiastic audiences of parents, visitors and partner pre-schools.

Just under one hundred children from Years 3 and 4 kept their audiences spell-bound during two separate performances of Scheherazade, a cultural fairy tale based on the Arabian Nights epic. The hour-long show was directed by Middle-School teacher, Tony Litting. It featured an exciting mix of Middle-Eastern dancing, singing and drama involving bravery, trickery and the eventual triumph of kindness over cruelty, and was delivered with humour and great enthusiasm. Familiar characters made an appearance, such as Ali Baba and the forty thieves, and even a genie from a golden lamp! The central message, as illustrated by the Sultan, was one of tolerance and understanding one another's points of view through listening and reflection.

The school has produced a DVD of the performance which is available to purchase. To view an extract of this wonderfully uplifting show, click here.

Reception and Key Stage 1 children performed traditional Easter rhymes and sang a range of seasonal songs, before donning Easter bonnets for a parade around the school accompanied by parents, younger brothers and sisters and pre-school children. This colourful pageant is now a popular and an established event at Somersham School.

Headteacher, Graham McArthur, said "The school has been filled with excitement, energy and colour in the lead up to these shows, and the audiences' response to the children's efforts has been lovely. The performances are a fitting and creative celebration of the Easter festival."
