England Women’s Cricket Captain returns to Somersham Primary after 20 years: 17 July 2009
Martin Dawe, Deputy Headteacher, remembers Charlotte Edwards back in 1991 as a lively and friendly pupil in Year 6, who showed exceptional sporting talents in team games such as football and cricket. Indeed she represented the school in both, captaining the Kwik Cricket team and winning the Huntingdon & Peterborough Cricket Cup, which still sits proudly in the school’s trophy cabinet. Charlotte was encouraged to join the Ramsey Cricket Colts by her father and at 12 years old, her sporting and leadership potential was spotted by national scouts, after which, as the saying goes, she never looked back.
Charlotte visited her old school this week to meet children in our current Kwik Cricket Team, sign autographs and donate an England team shirt to the school. Before she left, Radio Somersham was on hand to record an exclusive interview
Traversing wall mural project: May - June 2009
We are all rather proud of the giant painting that accompanies the school's
newest activity area - the traversing wall. Our artist in residence, Jane
Bower, worked with children on the School Council to design a stunning and yet
familiar landscape featuring local fenland flora and fauna.
Look more closely though and you will spot several surprises - a few insects and birds who have lost their way and now live happily amongst the water, land and overhead. In some cases, these quirky features are only noticeable to those who are climbing across the wall.
Over 40 children from Years 2 to 6 worked closely with Jane, and the mural itself took 4 days to complete. Throughout there was further help from teachers, support staff and one of the school's governors too. All agree that the wonderful artistic result will make keeping healthy on the traversing wall will be even more fun from now on!
Thank you to the school's Parents and Friends Association whose 'Sponsored Bounce' event at Easter raised the majority of the funding for both the climbing wall and mural design.
We have created a picture diary showing the transformation of a bare outside surface to the vibrant, active feature in place today. Click here and be amazed!
Early Years/KS1 & KS2 Sports Mornings in pictures: July 2009
Although the weather was hot, both Infant and Junior Sports events were keenly and fairly contested, with great fun had by all.
Blue Team surprised even themselves to grab the Junior Trophy by a single point in the closest contest for many years.
Thanks to all parents who joined us for either or both events, and shared a picnic afterwards with their gallant competitors!
A wonderful online gallery of sporting memories from both events can be accessed by visiting the multimedia section.
Somersham Primary School Summer fete: 4th July 2009
Another hugely successful PFA organised event took place last Saturday,
featuring some rather special visitors as well as many more familiar
favourites.
Thanks to all who supported the running of the fair, PFA Committee members, parents and children. All monies raised are being directed to upgrading the school's outdoor trim trail equipment, with the work already starting in earnest this week.
