The presence of Somersham Primary School on the World Wide Web became a reality this week with the Phase 1 launch of a brand new website at a special ceremony.
Visitors from local community groups and partner schools joined children, governors and parents for the ‘countdown to going live’, which was held at the school on Monday 13th June 2005. The event is the culmination of work begun back in September with the formation of the ‘On the Web Somersham Action Team’ (OWSAT). The group brought together representative children, governors, parents and Information Technology students and staff from Cambridge Regional College. This learning partnership saw the children’s role as web designers providing original ideas and content, while the students undertook the more technical tasks as part of their BTEC National IT Course studies.
The OWSAT Team
The OWSAT mission was to enhance the feelings of pride that we all have in Somersham School by providing the widest audience with an insight into the life and work of everyone at the school. The website will include up to the minute information about the school and its activities; examples of beautiful and creative work produced by the children; details about the school’s organization; recent history and location; and interactive links with the village and wider communities. There are sections for the Children, Governors, Parents, and Community.
As the site develops, there is the potential for greater interactivity for children and parents, with online advice on current and forthcoming in-class activities, discussion features and homework guidance. The launches of Phases 2 and 3 are planned over the next 18 months.
Headteacher, Graham McArthur, said “The OWSAT project is a key focus for our school’s improvement agenda this year. The team’s achievement so far is the result of a creative learning partnership between children and adults within and beyond the school.
It fulfils the group’s aims and develops our school’s communications
network superbly by providing a new medium for sharing and exchanging
information. I am grateful to all those involved, especially Sarah Mills
and the Cambridge Regional College team, for their enthusiasm and dedication.
We are looking forward to building on the website’s appeal in the
coming year”
