12th September: A 'singing success'!

Charlotte and Nathan review Joseph the Musical, Upper School's end of term production

With nearly 100 children taking part, we sang, danced and acted our way to a brilliant stage performance of the hit musical Joseph. Two full audiences of parents showed their enthusiasm, with one describing our efforts as 'just like on the London stage - the singing was great!' Mr Dawe also described the show as 'amazing and full of energy'.

The play tells a story of Joseph and father Jacob, and how in the eyes of his eleven brothers, Joseph was seen as his parents' favourite. Their jealousy resulted in Joseph being chucked down a well and then sold into slavery. But his hard work and a talent for explaining people's dreams saw him become rich and famous as the Governor of Egypt. He shows his compassion in the end when welcoming his brothers who were sick with hunger.

Highlights included a swaying, crooning Frenchman (Ian's accent was ace!); the King's brilliant impersonation of Elvis; and of course Joseph's coat of many colours, which stretched across the whole stage during the final number.

The magic of this one hour show has been captured on DVD, copies of which will be on sale from the school office shortly at a bargain price of £5.00. You can also watch a preview of our children in action.

16 July 2008: On the Mark

High tech accolade confirms our school’s success in all things ICT

Children at Somersham Primary School are at the forefront of using information and communications technology to enhance their work, and that’s official!

Following an extensive external assessment Somersham has been awarded the prestigious ICT Mark by Becta, the British Education Communications and Technology Agency, the government funded body responsible for promoting the use of ICT in Britain’s schools and colleges.

The award recognises the school’s success in developing the strategic use of ICT in both administration and across the curriculum. Parents will have proof that their children are attending a school at the forefront of modern technology. David Hawkins, the school’s ICT Subject Leader enthused, ‘we are delighted to be awarded the ICT Mark. It recognises our positive approach to ICT and the benefits it is bringing to our children. At Somersham, all staff believe that ICT can be used in every aspect of learning and that it is essential our children are equipped for the modern world.’

In a detailed report, on ICT provision and practice, the school’s assessor identifies such key features as:

  • A clear and shared vision for ICT that puts every child at the heart of learning, and is shared by all staff and is consistent with the wider aims and aspirations of the school.
  • Systematic planning of ICT across the curriculum and particularly in the use of multimedia.
  • Teachers who are enthusiastic and confident in their effective use of ICT to support learning and to add value.
  • Parents who are well informed through ‘the excellent and lively, up to date website that is full of school life and activity’.
  • Children who are developing ownership and confidence in learning, as seen through the ‘exceptional’ quality and presentation of their work.

Neil McLean, Executive Director for Educational Practice at Becta said, ‘Somersham Primary thoroughly deserves the accolade of an ICT mark. The school clearly demonstrates how important it is to take a holistic approach to using ICT in an educational environment. Their investment in new technology has contributed to substantial improvements in learning.’
