Thinking of others: raising funds for victims of the Haitian Earthquake: 5th February 2010

Mr McArthur reflects on a wonderful team effort

Somersham Haiti Friendship FairChildren from Somersham Primary took the lead this week in co-ordinating the school’s fund-raising effort in response to the devastating recent events in Haiti. Having watched some video footage during a whole school assembly, an ambitious target to donate £500 to the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal was agreed. Key Stage 1 children organised a cake break, which was magnificently supported by parents and carers, and all of the munching raised a total of £142! Other events were run by extra-curricular club members such as the gardening group, and our support staff team held a ‘Hats, Heals and Handbags for Haiti’ costume day, raising £85.

The grand finale was a Friendship Fair, conceived and organised with great efficiency by the School Council. This after school event included traditional stalls, competitions and a raffle, and literally hundreds of enthusiastic children, parents and relatives flocked to the hall. The fair raised £338. With other donations all included, the final total of £567.43 represents a brilliant team effort, and one that warmed all of our hearts in the knowledge that we can make a real difference in times of need.

Running Club achieves cross country triumph!

Report by Rhys and Sam: 13th January 2010

Running Club TriumphOn Saturday 10th January, eight pupils from Somersham Primary School went to Priory Park in a snowy St Neots to take part in a cross country running event. Our team (Rhys, Sam, Holly, Branden, Dillon, Curtis, Adam and Harry) has been training together, with Miss Lowe’s help, at Running Club for the last few months.

We all raced in the U11 boys’ and girls’ race. The race was 1.5 Km all the way round the park non-stop. It was very cold and slippery, which made it a lot harder for us to warm up.

Then there was the claxon and off we went. We were all in a big group until the hill. Then each and every one of us went at our own pace. By the time the parents had reached the finish line, Rhys was only 100 yards from victory and he soon crossed the line to claim victory for Somersham Primary School: First time lucky for Somersham! The 2nd person to cross the line for Somersham was Sam, soon followed by Dillon.

At the presentation, Rhys got a champions medal and we learned that our boys’ team had also won a medal, claimed by Rhys, Sam and Dillon. The whole team were extremely proud of our first run.

Thanks to Miss Lowe for preparing us so well for this event, and to all our supporters on the day. (We all hope that we get to go to another cross country event soon. The Cambridgeshire Schools race will take place in April 2010)

It’s a Cracker!

Report on the Early Years/Lower School festive production by Joseph and Carla

The story was told by Grand dad, who looked back to a time when people didn’t have very much but, as he said, ‘still we were happy’. There were songs and dancing by Christmas crackers and the shepherds and wise men. Year 2 children spoke out clearly and the singing was beautiful. Reception showed us the tableau of the Nativity and sang ‘Away in a Manger’. Both of the main performances were packed with our parents and relatives. My Nan brought her tissues, but she ended up laughing out loud! We all had great fun, even though some of the jokes were more than 150 years old!

Countdown to Christmas

Upper School Christmas Production reviewed by Aaron and Katie

Everyone knows the story of Christmas, but our show was set in a village hall where a Nativity play was to be staged. But nothing seemed to run smoothly – the cleaners dreamed about holidays abroad and Calipso dancing instead of getting on with their tidying jobs. Some of the actors and actresses argued about their roles: who would get the best dressing room and who would end up as the back end of a cow! Then there was Cop This, our very own Heavy Metal boy band, who performed live on stage. In the end, the message of Christmas shone through – show love and caring to everyone, and enjoy the thrill of giving. Soloists Daniel and Georgia sang with real feeling, and we all had a great time.

Thanks to all the Upper School teachers, support staff and all of the children for making the show so special.

We hope that you enjoy both productions all over again…

Severe Weather Updates

The prolonged period of bad weather has resulted in a need to check whether schools in the area are open. The following link can be used to check closure information:

Lighting up our learning in EYFS

Mrs Miller reports

Divali is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. The festival is to remind us of the story of Rama and Sita and how good always triumphs over evil. In the story, Prince Rama and Princess Sita were banished to the forest for fourteen years. During this time, Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, the ten-headed demon. Hanuman the Monkey King helped Rama rescue Sita. When they returned home people put out rows of sparkling divas (lamps) and lit fireworks to welcome them back.

In Robin and Wren Classes, we have been dressing up as Rama and Sita and telling each other our favourite parts of the Divali story. We made masks and did some diva maths. We found India and Sri Lanka on a world map and made some Indian flags. At the end of this special project, Anastasia in Year 6 taught us an Indian Bollywood dance. We really enjoyed ourselves and we hope you enjoy watching us on the video clip.

Where’s Arthur Somersham?

Arthur SomershamHow good are your observation skills? Hidden somewhere within our website is a cheeky and rather inquisitive new student, Arthur Somersham. Can you find him and say what he is doing? But don’t delay, because he moves around rather quickly!

Send in your answers to Mr McArthur or send him an email. There will be a prize each month for correctly finding Arthur’s whereabouts and writing the best description of what he might be doing.

Well done to Ben and Alex who spotted Arthur in November the site's Multimedia Section among the school choir. According to the boys, Arthur was keen to join in but Mrs Cusworth felt that his singing was drowning out the piano!

In December, Arthur was found by Poppy and Sophie – they showed the rest of the children where Arthur was hiding last Friday during our achievement assembly. The girls reckoned that Arthur was desperately keen to join the school’s Eco Council because he has some great energy saving ideas – to do as little as possible! However, the rest of the children didn’t agree.

He doesn't stay still for long! He moved again on 13 January!

Raising the green flag: Looking out for our world

Children from Somersham Primary share their views and experiences at a County conference

Following our school's gaining of the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises 'excellence in the field of environmental activity', a group of children and staff from our Eco Council were invited to present at this year's CEES Sustainability in Schools conference, held at Girton College, Cambridge on 27th November 2009.

The conference was attended by more than one hundred delegates from schools, colleges and other local authority settings. The children performed a specially written song entitled 'We're a Sustainable School', with percussion accompaniment. (Hear this live on Radio Somersham).

The children shared their experiences in planning major projects and changing attitudes on the way to applying for Green Flag status, a detailed process that spanned 18 months, at a workshop later in the morning. Ms Denton and Mrs Bauld also described a few of the major school projects that have contributed to the school's Green Flag Award. Photos and other information were also displayed and Mr McArthur gave an introductory presentation, which outlined the Green Flag Award and the importance of sustainability from a whole school perspective.

We were extremely proud of the children's efforts that certainly enhanced the school's reputation for creative and exciting learning.

Champions League

Somersham Primary triumphs over three-time winners in the B Team Champions' Play-off

Somersham Primary B Team WinnersFootball matches don't get much more exciting than this! Large Schools' B Team winners, Somersham were up against Medium Schools' champions, Crosshall Junior to see who would take the tournament shield for Autumn 2009. Crosshall were the proud holders of the title for the last three years, and they started confidently. Fresh from their recent victories, Somersham were equal in every area and took an early lead with a smart turn and shot by Liam. An equalising goal came soon afterwards following a classy one-touch move, but just before half time, Adam restored the home team's advantage with a pin-point shot from just inside the penalty area.

The second half was keenly contested and Harry and Alex chased for everything. There were few clear chances, but it was Crosshall that again drew level when reacting quickest to the ball running loose after a great save by Josh in the home goal. Somersham players gritted their teeth and had their best spell in the game, with several attacks on the Crosshall goal. The final one of these saw Jack B shoot powerfully into the net via the cross bar, and our strong defence (Curtis, Jordan and Alan) held firm. Somersham won the match 3-2 and were presented with individual medals and the tournament trophy (pictured).

Thanks to Mr Dawe for his coaching and to all our parents for their enthusiastic support from the touch line.
