This year Somersham Primary has taken part in a national initiative called the Inclusion Development Programme (IDP). Linked closely with key aspects of our learning and teaching ethos, including Assessment for Learning, SEAL and study support, IDP focuses on improving the quality of teaching for all pupils but especially those with identified learning needs.
Separate projects have taken place throughout this year at Somersham Primary, with noticeable and pleasing success, and we were able to showcase these at a recent Eastern Counties IDP Impact celebration event held at Churchill College, Cambridge.
A copy of our presentation can be viewed here.
In the coming year we are keen to push ahead and really embed the improvements made so far in terms of new curriculum opportunities and developing specialist resources.
World champion water-skier & ex-pupil Kim Lumley chats to Radio Somersham
We were delighted to welcome back Kim Lumley who, since her days as a pupil at Somersham Primary, has gone on to excel in the field of water-skiing. Crowned world champion in 2005, and with a string of other titles and awards in a really demanding sport, Kim visited the school as part of Healthy Week 2010. She met the children and staff, showing off several impressive trophies and sharing her experiences of learning and sporting anecdotes. Before she left, Radio Somersham caught up with her to record an exclusive interview.
Kim has promised to return; next time with her speed boat in tow!
New plans are available for the proposed new Children's Centre on the School site:

Healthy Week 2010 – stimulating and challenging our abilities
The weather was fair in support of a week-long feast of physical and mental fun, as our whole school Healthy Week took centre stage. The school’s PE subject leader, Mrs Broadbank put together an exciting agenda of health related activities, designed to channel and challenge the children’s energies. And many parents and carers joined in the fun too!
Familiar events such as sports mornings and ‘picnics in the park’, sports’ coaching and climbing, were joined by new opportunities, such as Tri-golf, Soca and Salsa Dancing and Dodgeball. Coaches from outside organisations joined the staff and some of our children (Play Leaders) in leading the sessions. Parents and KS2 children were invited to take part in a Family Fun Run, and there was a mass Soca Dancing exercise for all children and staff on the school playground. As well as exploring our school’s natural environment (pond dipping; bug hunts), Healthy Week involved visiting the local environment too: Early Years & Key Stage 1 children visited Bedfordshire Butterfly Park. Midweek we welcomed back to Somersham Primary ex-pupil Kim Lumley, the current World Water-Skiing Champion, along with her speed boat! Extra lunchtime activities included games and competitions.
The week concluded with an opportunity to dress as a sports person, with the proceeds from a collection taken passed on to Transplant Sport, a registered Charity whose main aim is to raise awareness of the need for organ donation in the UK and worldwide so as to help people lead normal and active lives after transplantation (see: http://www.transplantsport.org.uk/).
The top three placings, in a keenly competed event, were as follows:

Somersham Children’s Centre update
Having access to a rich and varied menu of before and after school learning opportunities is a vital contributor to achieving our vision of equipping every child with the knowledge and skills that will give them the best chance of success in adult life. The Government’s Children’s Plan sets out how schools of the future will act as a hub for the whole community, providing a range of extended services designed to tackle barriers to children’s learning and well-being.
It is exciting to report therefore, that building of the proposed Somersham Children’s Centre, which will incorporate a range of learning, health and social services’ support for families with the local community, will begin in earnest after Christmas. The latest timescale details that Parkhall Playgroup and Kids Time Club will move to a temporary site within the school grounds in time for the beginning of Spring term 2011. Practical considerations for this year-long transition are being carefully discussed, and will be shared in due course.
Plans are available to view on the school’s community notice board.
